The Road To Where We Are...
The genesis of this work took place in the heart of two brothers, Earl and Michael Goings, who happened upon the small town of St. Pauls, N.C. while in the military.
In the year 1978, doors were opened for them to hold a weeknight service at a local church. What began as a one-night per week service continued to grow so much until there was not enough room in the house to hold the people. At this point, they sought the Lord about renting a larger building to accommodate the growth. In 1996, Pastor Goings saw in a vision a large building that would have space enough to house the ministry with plenty of room for future growth. After an intense search of the area around us, we were blessed to purchase a 20-acre piece of property located on the corner of Hwy. 20 and Pages Lake Road. On August 20, 2000, we broke ground for a 50,000 square foot building that would include a sanctuary, classrooms, office space, bookstore, and a multipurpose area for sports and fellowship activities. We entered the new building in October, 2004. God told us to create a need and He would fill it. He has done just that and is continuing to do so. In November of 1978, another door was opened on Broad Street in St. Pauls. A storefront building was converted into a sanctuary and on December 3, 1978, the first official service was held. At that time, through the leading of the Holy Spirit, Earl Goings and his wife Denise accepted the calling of pastor of this ministry and Michael, who had an evangelistic mantel upon him, was released to do the work of an evangelist. After hearing from God, the ministry was named: "Faith Tabernacle Church of Deliverance".
In 1989, the opportunity came to purchase a piece of land outside the city limits in a township called Tobermory. On this land was a small wood-frame building, furnished and ready to be used as a church. Though the membership was small and finances were low, God provided the means for the purchase of the land and the building but he was not finished yet. He began to speak to the pastor about starting a building project. The adversary was mad and sought to bring the work to a halt. One night, after a powerful service, the wood-frame building caught fire for some unknown reason and burned to the ground. A deadly blow had been dealt to the very foundation of the ministry with the purpose of knocking it down but with God’s help and the prayers of the saints, we landed on our feet and continued to build God a house. During the time of building on the new edifice, services were held in an old church building located in Tarheel, N.C. There, God moved wonderfully and powerfully. Many souls were saved and we were able to acquire the finances to complete the building project.
In October 1982, the new home of Faith Tabernacle Church of Deliverance was complete enough to hold services. It was a joyful time for all of those who were the founding members of this ministry. From that time forward, many changes began to take place and the vision began to unfold in the minds of the members. God has called us to be a house of refuge, a place where the hurting, the misfits, and the unloved could come and receive the healing that they needed. With this in mind, we later adopted what we now call our vision statement. It states that we are: "To be a house of refuge, ministering to the needs of hurting and wounded people, teaching, guiding, and maturing them so that they can comfort others with the comfort they have been comforted with." The ministry was built on love and fellowship and it is these two essential elements that have kept it alive until this day.
In 1992, after completing the addition of a fellowship hall and classroom space, God spoke to Pastor Goings again concerning changing the name of the church because of the rapid growth that was taking place. The name was changed to Faith Tabernacle Christian Center and remains so until this day. The ministry continued to grow, multiply, and along with this growth came the need for more space to accommodate the various services, classes, and activities that were being offered.
Again, God began to speak Pastor Earl about building. In 1996, Pastor Goings saw in a vision a large building that would have space enough to house the ministry with plenty of room for future growth.
